The American Legion was born at a caucus of the First American Expeditionary Force, March 15-17, 1919, in Paris, France. It was at this caucus that The American Legion received its name. Also at this time the Preamble to the Constitution of The American Legion was put into final form.
The first National Convention was held November 10-12, 1919, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The delegates selected Indianapolis, Indiana, as the location for the permanent National Headquarters.
Post 484 was founded in Stirling in 1970. Membership is open to veterans who served during armed conflicts. Prospective members are encouraged to call the post or simply drop in at any meeting usually held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. You do not have to be a resident of Long Hill Township to join. First year membership is free to active duty members or if you are currently serving.
The post's activities include:
- Organizing and sponsoring the Memorial Day Parade Collection and proper destruction of old and worn-out flags. Flags are collected at a drop box in the lobby of the Public Works building on Warren Ave.
- Outreach to assist all veterans in receiving all the government benefits to which they are entitled. ($250 Property Tax reduction; Use of the Veterans Hospital at Lyons). Personal support for individual veterans as required.
- Sponsoring about 5 high school juniors each year to participate in the N.J. American Legion Boys State program.
- Regular volunteer work at the Veterans Hospital in Lyons, NJ.
